The Meeting

Monday 21st January

Today we met a level 3 Single Camera Media group to discuss a possible collaboration with Shane Bailey and I for our Audio Project 2 (their Media Project 2). This collaboration would include the media group producing,  filming and editing a film and for us to record all location sound and to take the audio into post production to finish. In this meeting, the group discussed their ideas for their film, What Hurts More?. What Hurts More? is a comedy about a man, who somehow, becomes pregnant. The film is just in the ideas stage at the minute, with just a story board planned. The script hasn’t been started yet but we were informed that a draft of the script should be completed in 2 weeks for us to read through and to spot. They finished by asking us certain questions that they had prepared for any audio groups that approached them for this possible collaboration. They asked such questions as, why did we choose to approach a single cam group? and asked for our average grade boundaries. This showed to us that they were serious about producing a good film that would receive a high mark, that could possibly be used for a portfolio when complete. We finished with a few questions. Questions such as how much creative freedom would we have with it being a comedy? and if they had a prepared schedule, as we were a little worried that script writing hadn’t begun yet with it being late January. We were told we would receive full freedom with the sound, but wanted us to get inspiration from the film Juno when producing the music for it. We were also told we would get a schedule within the week. After a few more discussions, the media group and Shane and I agreed that we’d work together on their comedy film, What Hurts More?

The Addendum and Brief

For our Audio Project, we aim to work alongside a Media Production group as freelancers and perform both the location sound recording and post-production for a short film. We would also like to compose some music for the film, in whatever style the group feels fit.

We would like to find a group that will give us a lot of creative freedom with the soundtrack, with some experimental elements and scope to create our own music. We would also like to work on a project that interests us with like-minded creative students.

Sound for films is something that interests us both as a career so this is a good opportunity for us to get experience in a number of different fields, including Foley which would allow us to take advantage of the Universities sound theatre.

We emailed a couple of Media Production groups about working on their project and we eventually managed to join a group working on a very interesting film about  the effects of pregnancy on a couple where it is the man that is pregnant, not the woman. They needed location sound recording, all post-production and original music so it fit our requests perfectly. We also go some creative freedom with the music, but were given other film soundtracks as influences to take on board for the feel of the film. There was not a lot of scope for experimental sound editing which was a shame, but we did manage to do a bit of Foley and use the University sound theatre.

What Hurts More?

A short comedy drama exploring the hypothetical issues behind a pregnant man

An unemployed 32 year old man married to a successful businesswoman is  told he has somehow become pregnant after attributing previous symptoms  to man flu. The film explores the balance of power within a pregnancy  relationship and how man and woman would cope if the roles were  reversed. It will be set  almost entirely in the couple’s home, dealing with physical and  emotional problems caused by the pregnancy. There will only be two main  characters but friends, relatives and a nurse will make small  appearances.

Audio Production

We would love to have input from audio production students on this  project. We will require recording on location as well as foley, sound  effects and a simple original soundtrack. We are open to suggestions and will provide plenty of creative freedom.
